Newcastle Free Walking Tours: The Questions Visitors Ask
This site is a directory and nothing else. It sells nothing, operates nothing and walks nobody around the city. The two tours you find here, Geordie Genius and Newcastle Uncovered, belong to independent guides called John and Zoe and sit on GuruWalk, the platform that handles reservations. Booking a place means booking with the guide through GuruWalk, never with this website.
Who Runs This Site And How It Works
A directory, or a tour company wearing a disguise?
A directory, plain and simple. This site operates no tours of its own and runs nothing on the ground; it compares what already exists. Both walks are listed on GuruWalk and led by independent guides, John and Zoe, and booking happens on GuruWalk rather than here. The walks are pay what you want, which is why no price appears anywhere on this site.
Does the walk cost anything to join?
Reservations go through GuruWalk. Choose your walk, Geordie Genius or Newcastle Uncovered, pick a date and time, and book your place there. GuruWalk sends the confirmation, and your guide, John or Zoe, meets everyone at Grey's Monument. This site takes no bookings, no payments and no personal details; it only points you towards the walk pages.
How do you book a place on a walk?
Because there is no fee to show. Pay-what-you-want means the guide charges nothing and you settle the value at the end. Any number we printed would be made up, so we print none. The only costs you might meet are ones a walk can point you to afterwards, such as Newcastle Castle, where the Keep and the Black Gate charge for entry.
Tips, Ratings And Cancelled Plans
Why is no price shown for any walk here?
They belong to GuruWalk, not to us. Geordie Genius, led by John, carries a rating of 4.86 out of 5 from 111 reviews. Newcastle Uncovered, led by Zoe, carries 4.83 out of 5 from 53 reviews. Those scores are the guides' and their walkers' on GuruWalk, and we pass them on as they stand, without adjusting or rounding anything.
Whose review scores appear on this page?
That is your decision, and no going rate will be invented here. Pay-what-you-want leaves the figure to each walker, based on what the tour was worth and what they can spare. If a guide has spent two hours sharing stories you enjoyed, that is the measure most people go by. Nothing is demanded, and nobody is turned away for paying nothing.
How much should you tip after the walk?
Cancellations and changes are dealt with on GuruWalk, where the booking was made. Since nothing was paid in advance, there is no deposit at risk. If your plans shift, release your place there and book another day, and if a guide ever has to cancel, GuruWalk is where you would learn of it. Your confirmation holds the details for your specific tour.
What happens if you must cancel or rebook?
Both tours cover the city's highlights and both run about two hours, so there is no bad choice. Geordie Genius, with John, digs into the stories behind Newcastle's grand buildings and its character. Newcastle Uncovered, with Zoe, travels from that same grand architecture to the Vampire Rabbit. If quirky detail appeals, choose Zoe; either way you start beneath Grey's Monument.
Picking A Tour
Which tour suits a first-time visitor best?
You can, and many do. Newcastle is compact and easily walked, and several of its finest sights cost nothing: Grey's Monument itself, the Quayside, the Tyne Bridge, which stays open to walkers, and the free museums, among them the Great North Museum and the Discovery Museum. What a guide adds is context, the stories behind the sandstone, and two hours in company. That is a different experience, not a substitute.
Is a guide necessary to enjoy the city?
Two guides, two routes, one shared starting point. Grey's Monument, free to visit at any hour, doubles as the meeting spot for both GuruWalk tours listed here, which means you can size up the column and the surrounding streets while you wait. Geordie Genius, led by John, holds a rating of 4.86 out of 5 from 111 reviews. Newcastle Uncovered, led by Zoe, sits at 4.83 out of 5 across 53 reviews. Each runs about two hours.
Where does each Newcastle walk start?
Both walks are booked through GuruWalk, where John's Geordie Genius and Zoe's Newcastle Uncovered each have their own page. Nothing is charged when you reserve: these are pay what you want walks, so you sign up with no fee and decide the value afterwards. Any question about your reservation, the meeting point or a cancellation belongs with GuruWalk's support, not with this site.
Who leads the Newcastle walks?
Head to Grey's Monument, where both walks set off, a few minutes ahead of the start time, and look out for your guide. Each walk covers city streets for about two hours, so flat shoes and a layer for the weather make sense. When it ends you pay the guide directly what you think the walk deserved, in cash or by card depending on the walk.
